Mother-of-pearl

Mother-of-pearl, also known as nacre, is obtained from the shell of an oyster-like mollusk called Placuna Placenta, also known as capiz in Filipino. These shells are informally referred to as pearl oysters. Capiz shells have a translucent nature and are widely used for windows and lamps in the Philippines. Because these shells are not classified as protected marine animals, it is legal to fish for them.

In addition to their use for windows and lamps, capiz shells are also extensively utilized in art objects. By keeping the shells adequately moist after harvesting, they can be somewhat shaped before resin is poured over them. The shells consist of several overlapping layers, and the thickness can vary among different mollusks.

While genuine mother-of-pearl can be used for windows like glass, it is more prone to breakage. On the other hand, it is considerably more affordable than glass.
